COVID-19 socio-economic impacts & disaster risk governance in 7 Western Sahel & Lake Chad countries

Led by Harvard’s Data Pop Alliance (DPA), this study in 7 countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal) is commissioned by UNDP through the Sahel Resilience Project and carried out under the leadership of ECOWAS. Research started in February 2021 with final deliverables served by end October.

IRMA’s role is focused on Disaster Risk Governance (DRG): exploring the role and involvement of Africa Union, ECOWAS and national governments (and especially the National Disaster management Authorities, NDMAs) in the COVID-19 response and the overall institutional DRG architecture parallel to ministries of health and competing disaster events. The leading question is: “Is disaster risk governance fit for purpose in COVID-19 management?”.
